ceftizoxime

Ceftizoxime is a semisynthetic, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea (including uncomplicated cervical and urethral forms), pelvic inflammatory disease, meningitis caused by certain bacteria, and other severe or life-threatening bacterial diseases. It is highly resistant to beta-lactamases produced by both aerobic and anaerobic gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Ceftizoxime acts by binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) inside the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting the final stage of peptidoglycan synthesis. This disruption leads to cell lysis mediated by autolytic enzymes such as autolysins. The drug can be administered intravenously or intramuscularly. It was marketed under the brand name Cefizox but has been withdrawn from some markets such as the US since 2007.
