ceftolozane

Ceftolozane is a semi-synthetic, broad-spectrum fifth-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is primarily used in combination with the beta-lactamase inhibitor tazobactam for the treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections (with metronidazole), complicated urinary tract infections, and hospital-acquired or ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia. Ceftolozane acts by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) involved in bacterial cell wall synthesis, thereby inhibiting peptidoglycan cross-linking and leading to bacterial cell death. It has high affinity for PBPs of *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*, *Escherichia coli*, *Klebsiella pneumoniae*, and other enteric bacteria[1][5]. The drug was developed by Cubist Pharmaceuticals and approved by the FDA in 2014 as part of the fixed-dose combination product Zerbaxa[1][6].
