Overview

Zydotum is a fixed-dose combination antibiotic developed by Venus Remedies, utilizing their proprietary Antibiotic Adjuvant Entity (AAE) technology. The product is composed of ceftriaxone, a third-generation cephalosporin; sulbactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor; and disodium edetate (EDTA), which serves as an adjuvant. Ceftriaxone works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Sulbactam protects ceftriaxone from degradation by inhibiting Class A and some Class C beta-lactamases. The addition of disodium edetate enhances the combination's efficacy by chelating divalent cations, which helps disrupt bacterial biofilms and inhibits metallo-beta-lactamases (Class B) that require zinc for activity. Zydotum is approved for the treatment of various serious infections, including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, meningitis, and skin and soft tissue infections, particularly those caused by multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria.
