Overview

Cefuroxime + gentamicin is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for the treatment of serious bacterial infections, including pneumonia, intra-abdominal infections, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and sepsis. Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing misreading of mRNA. The combination provides broad-spectrum coverage against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This regimen is often reserved for severe or hospital-acquired infections where monotherapy may be insufficient[1][7]. Clinical studies have shown comparable efficacy between this combination and carbapenems in elderly patients with serious infections[1][7]. Renal function monitoring is essential due to the nephrotoxic potential of gentamicin[2].
