Protein 50S Ribosomal Subunit (50S)

Target
50S
Molecular classification
Ribosomal Subunit, RNA-Protein Complex
01

Overview

The 50S ribosomal subunit is the larger component of the prokaryotic (bacterial and archaeal) 70S ribosome. It plays a central role in protein synthesis by catalyzing peptide bond formation, facilitating translation of messenger RNA (mRNA) into polypeptides, and providing binding sites for transfer RNAs (tRNAs) and various protein factors. Many antibiotics bind specifically to sites on or near the functional centers of the bacterial/archaeal 50S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting key steps in translation.
