Overview

Cefuroxime + tobramycin is a combination of two antibiotics used together primarily for the treatment of serious bacterial infections, especially in immunocompromised or cancer patients with suspected or documented bacterial complications. Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death. Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds irreversibly to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing misreading of mRNA, which results in bactericidal activity. The combination has been shown effective and generally well-tolerated for treating various infections such as septicemia, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, and others caused by susceptible bacteria[4][1][5][3]. This regimen may be particularly useful in patients at high risk for infection-related complications.
