It functions as both a transglycosylase, polymerizing glycan chains, and a transpeptidase, cross-linking peptide subunits. PBP1A is a primary target for β-lactam antibiotics, but mutations can lead to antibiotic resistance. It is crucial for cell division and bacterial viability.
β-lactam antibiotics inhibit PBP1A's transpeptidase activity by covalently binding to the active site, preventing the cross-linking of peptide subunits in peptidoglycan.
