Cefuroxime + fusidic acid is a combination of two antibacterial agents used together to prevent or treat bacterial infections, particularly in surgical settings. Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death. Fusidic acid is a steroidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by preventing the translocation of elongation factor G (EF-G) on the ribosome, thereby halting protein production and exerting bacteriostatic effects. This combination has been studied for use in prophylaxis against postoperative infections, such as after lung resection surgery, where it was shown to reduce rates of septic complications and wound infections compared to cefuroxime alone[1]. Both agents are active against staphylococci and other susceptible bacteria.
