The Dropless Regimen developed by the University of California, San Francisco is a postoperative treatment protocol for cataract surgery designed to replace traditional multi-drop eye regimens. It consists of a combination of two small molecule drugs: cefuroxime, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, and triamcinolone acetonide, a synthetic corticosteroid. Cefuroxime is administered via intracameral injection to prevent endophthalmitis by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, while triamcinolone acetonide is delivered via subconjunctival injection to provide sustained anti-inflammatory effects. This approach is specifically being evaluated in safety-net hospital populations to improve treatment adherence and reduce the burden of complex postoperative care.
