cefuroxime axetil

Cefuroxime axetil is an oral second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic and a prodrug of cefuroxime. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections including upper and lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gonorrhea, and early Lyme disease. After oral administration, it is hydrolyzed in vivo to the active compound cefuroxime. Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis. Cefuroxime axetil exhibits activity against both Gram-positive (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus [methicillin-susceptible], Streptococcus pneumoniae) and Gram-negative bacteria (e.g., Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli), with some resistance due to β-lactamase production or altered PBPs[2][5][8].
