Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Roxtal XP is a fixed-dose combination oral antibiotic developed and marketed by Everest Pharmaceuticals in Bangladesh. It contains cefuroxime axetil, a semi-synthetic second-generation cephalosporin prodrug, and clavulanic acid (as potassium clavulanate), a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Cefuroxime axetil is hydrolyzed in vivo to release active cefuroxime, which exerts bactericidal activity by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic acid acts as a suicide inhibitor of beta-lactamase enzymes, protecting cefuroxime from enzymatic degradation and extending its spectrum of activity against beta-lactamase-producing resistant bacterial strains. Roxtal XP is approved for the treatment of various susceptible bacterial infections, including pharyngitis, tonsillitis, acute otitis media, acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and early Lyme disease.
