Celastrus paniculatus is an evergreen climbing shrub belonging to the family Celastraceae, widely used in traditional Ayurvedic, Unani, and Siddha medicine. It is primarily valued for its neuroprotective, nootropic (memory-enhancing), and adaptogenic properties, with seed oil and extracts historically used as cognitive enhancers, brain tonics, and for treating neurological disorders such as cognitive dysfunction, epilepsy, paralysis, and insomnia[1][3][9]. Traditional use also includes the treatment of conditions like arthritis, rheumatism, gout, leprosy, sciatica, skin diseases, and some digestive and metabolic ailments[2][3][9]. The active phytochemicals are mainly found in the seeds and include alkaloids (celastrine, paniculatin), sesquiterpenes (malkangunin), triterpenoids, sterols, flavonoids, saponins, and fatty acids. The primary hypothesized mechanism is acetylcholinesterase inhibition, potentially enhancing acetylcholine levels and leading to nootropic effects[1][3]. Despite extensive traditional use, robust human clinical studies confirming safety and efficacy are lacking.
