Overview

Celecoxib + esomeprazole is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used together, typically in patients at high risk for gastrointestinal complications who require anti-inflammatory therapy. Celecoxib is a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which reduces inflammation and pain by selectively inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme involved in prostaglandin synthesis. Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system at the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells. The combination aims to provide effective pain and inflammation relief while reducing the risk of NSAID-induced gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding, especially in patients with arthritis or those requiring long-term NSAID therapy[1]. Clinical studies have shown that combining celecoxib with esomeprazole can be more effective than celecoxib alone for preventing recurrent ulcer bleeding[1].
