Overview

Celecoxib + etanercept is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used in the management of inflammatory conditions, particularly ankylosing spondylitis and potentially other rheumatic diseases. Celecoxib is a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), which reduces inflammation and pain by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. Etanercept is a biologic agent that acts as a dimeric fusion protein mimicking the tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR), binding to and neutralizing tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), thereby modulating immune responses involved in chronic inflammation. The combination has been studied for its efficacy in reducing MRI-detected inflammation and improving clinical outcomes in active ankylosing spondylitis, with evidence suggesting superior efficacy compared to celecoxib alone[8][4]. Both drugs are approved individually for use in rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and related conditions[3][5].
