Overview

Celery extract is derived from the seeds or other parts of the Apium graveolens plant. It has been traditionally used for its purported anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and diuretic properties. The main bioactive components include 3-n-butylphthalide and various flavonoids such as luteolin. Celery extract has been studied for potential benefits in conditions like hypertension (notably reducing blood pressure), anxiety and depression (as an adjunct in hypertensive patients), arthritis (antiarthritic effects), gout, and digestive complaints. Mechanistically, it may suppress proinflammatory cytokines and inhibit nitric oxide production; some extracts have shown activity against certain bacteria including Helicobacter pylori[1][3][7]. However, robust clinical evidence supporting these uses is limited.
