Overview

This cell-derived trivalent subunit influenza vaccine is a viral vaccine developed by Abbott Biologicals (formerly Solvay Pharmaceuticals) for the prevention of seasonal influenza. Unlike traditional vaccines produced in embryonated chicken eggs, this formulation is manufactured using a proprietary Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cell culture system. The vaccine is a subunit type, containing purified surface antigens—specifically hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA)—from three influenza virus strains, typically including two Influenza A subtypes (H1N1 and H3N2) and one Influenza B lineage. By utilizing cell-culture technology, the production process avoids the risk of egg-adaptive mutations that can reduce vaccine effectiveness and provides an alternative for individuals with egg allergies. Clinical development included Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials assessing safety and immunogenicity in healthy adults, demonstrating non-inferiority to egg-based counterparts.
