Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cell-free supernatant from Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM SD 5221 is a postbiotic preparation containing bioactive metabolites and cellular components secreted by the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM SD 5221. It is being investigated for its anti-biofilm and antifungal properties, particularly against Candida species (such as Candida albicans and Candida lusitaniae) in the context of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC). The supernatant acts by inhibiting fungal biofilm formation and downregulating key biofilm-associated genes, including ALS3, HWP1, EFG1, TEC1, and UME6, while upregulating the transcriptional repressor NRG1.
