Cell Penetrating Alphabodies (CPABs) targeting COVID-19 are a novel class of engineered small proteins developed by Complix. These biotherapeutics are designed to combine the high specificity and potency of biologics with the cell penetration and stability properties of small molecules. The core mechanism involves using an alpha-helical protein scaffold that can be engineered to bind with high affinity to specific intracellular or viral targets. For COVID-19, these CPABs are being developed to target highly conserved regions within the fusion machinery of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus causing COVID-19), thereby acting as potent inhibitors of viral entry into host cells. This approach is intended both for prophylactic and therapeutic use against current and future coronavirus variants by interfering with essential steps in viral fusion and entry[1][2][4][6]. The program is currently in preclinical development.
