Overview

CS-ACI (Cell Sheet-Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation) is an autologous cell therapy developed for the repair of articular cartilage defects, particularly in the knee. The technology involves harvesting a patient's own chondrocytes and culturing them on temperature-responsive polymer-coated surfaces to create a cohesive "cell sheet." This sheet preserves the cells' endogenous extracellular matrix (ECM) and adhesive proteins, such as fibronectin, allowing it to be transplanted directly onto the debrided cartilage defect without the need for sutures or synthetic scaffolds typically required in conventional autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI). The therapy is designed to facilitate the regeneration of functional hyaline-like cartilage and improve structural integration with the surrounding host tissue, aiming to provide superior long-term outcomes compared to microfracture or standard ACI techniques.
