Overview

Cellistem Lupus is an investigational allogeneic cell therapy composed of umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). Developed by Cells for Cells, a spin-off of the Universidad de los Andes in Chile, in collaboration with the CORFO Regenero Consortium, it is designed to treat severe lupus nephritis, a critical renal manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The therapy leverages the innate immunomodulatory and regenerative properties of MSCs, which can suppress overactive immune responses and promote tissue repair in the kidneys. Because these cells exhibit low immunogenicity, the treatment does not require genetic compatibility or HLA matching between the donor and the recipient. Cellistem Lupus is currently being evaluated in Phase II clinical trials to determine its efficacy and optimal dosing when added to standard-of-care immunosuppressive regimens.
