Overview
Cellistem OA is an allogeneic cell therapy developed by the Chilean biotechnology company Cells for Cells for the treatment of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. The therapy consists of a cryopreserved, ready-to-inject formulation of a proprietary subpopulation of umbilical cord tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) obtained from Wharton's jelly. Administered via intra-articular injection, Cellistem OA functions through the regenerative, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties of the stem cells and their secreted exosomes, which together promote cartilage repair and reduce joint inflammation. Clinical studies in South America have demonstrated significant improvements in pain reduction and joint function compared to standard treatments like hyaluronic acid. As of 2023, the company has transitioned manufacturing to the United States in preparation for FDA clinical trials.
