Overview

cellopolysaccharide + probiotics is an investigational combination therapy developed by the First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University, specifically for the treatment of diversion colitis. Diversion colitis is an inflammatory condition that occurs in segments of the colon that have been surgically excluded from the fecal stream, leading to a localized deficiency of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). The therapy consists of a cell-wall-derived polysaccharide (acting as a prebiotic) and a probiotic mixture, typically containing strains such as *Bifidobacterium*, *Lactobacillus*, and *Enterococcus*. When administered rectally as a retention enema, the probiotics ferment the polysaccharide to produce SCFAs, particularly butyrate, which provide essential energy to the colonic mucosa and exert anti-inflammatory effects. This approach aims to restore the local microenvironment and promote mucosal healing in the diverted bowel segment.
