The Cellspan Esophageal Implant (CEI) is a tissue-engineered combination product developed by Harvard Apparatus Regenerative Technology (now Biostage). It consists of a biocompatible, synthetic scaffold seeded with a patient's own adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The implant is designed to stimulate the regeneration of a functional, living biologic esophageal conduit in patients requiring full circumferential esophageal reconstruction, such as those with esophageal cancer or pediatric esophageal atresia. The product aims to replace segments up to 6 cm in length, providing a structural framework that facilitates tissue growth and integration.
