Cellspan Esophageal Implant (CEI) is a tissue-engineered regenerative medicine product developed by Biostage. It is a combination product consisting of autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (Ad-MSCs) seeded onto a proprietary biocompatible polyurethane tubular mesh scaffold. The implant is designed to act as a 'living tube' that, when surgically implanted, facilitates the regeneration of a functional esophageal neo-conduit by leveraging the body's inherent healing capacity. It is primarily targeted at treating pediatric and adult esophageal conditions, including esophageal atresia, cancer, and traumatic injury, where a segment of the esophagus is missing or severely damaged. The product has received Orphan Drug Designation from both the FDA and EMA for the treatment of esophageal atresia.
