Cellulase is a complex of enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of cellulose and related polysaccharides into monosaccharides such as β-glucose. Produced primarily by fungi, bacteria, and protozoans, cellulases act synergistically to break down the β-1,4-glycosidic bonds in cellulose. The enzyme complex typically includes endoglucanases (endo-1,4-β-D-glucanases), exoglucanases (exo-1,4-β-D-glucanases or cellobiohydrolases), and β-glucosidases. In medicine, cellulase is used as a digestive aid in multi-enzyme supplements for individuals with pancreatic insufficiency or digestive disorders and has also been used to treat phytobezoars (cellulose-based bezoars) in the stomach[5][6][2]. Its primary mechanism is enzymatic hydrolysis of dietary cellulose to improve digestion.
