Overview

Cellulose is a naturally occurring polysaccharide consisting of linear chains of β(1→4) linked D-glucose units. In the context of clinical research led by the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia, it is utilized as an inert placebo control in studies assessing the ergogenic effects of caffeine on physical performance and movement technique. Administered in opaque capsules, it serves to facilitate double-blind, randomized, crossover trial designs by providing a pharmacologically inactive comparator that mimics the appearance of the active supplement. While cellulose is commonly used as a dietary fiber or pharmaceutical excipient, its role in this specific context is strictly as a control for evaluating neuromuscular fatigue and biomechanical parameters in healthy subjects.
