Cellulose sulfate is a semi-synthesized polysaccharide sulfate polymer with a relatively simple chain structure. It possesses diverse biological activities, including antiviral, antibacterial, and anticoagulant properties. Its mechanism of action primarily involves electrostatic interactions between its negatively charged sulfate groups and positively charged regions on various biological proteins, thereby modulating their activity and stability. As an antiviral agent, it can inhibit viral entry into host cells by blocking the interaction between viral surface proteins and cellular receptors, and can also interfere with viral replication and assembly. It has been investigated for various biomedical applications, including drug delivery and as a microbicide.
