Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Celsior is a multi-component, cold crystalloid cardioplegia and organ preservation solution. It is specifically designed to provide myocardial protection during cardiac surgery and to preserve solid organs (heart, lung, liver, kidney, and pancreas) during transplantation. The solution's formulation includes mannitol and lactobionate to prevent cellular edema, histidine for acid-base buffering, reduced glutathione as an antioxidant to scavenge free radicals, and glutamate as a metabolic substrate to support energy production. Additionally, its high magnesium content acts as a natural calcium antagonist to prevent calcium overload during reperfusion. In the context of pediatric cardiac surgery, such as the arterial switch operation for transposition of the great vessels, Celsior is utilized to maintain myocardial viability during prolonged periods of induced cardiac arrest.
