Celtura is an MF59-adjuvanted, cell culture-derived monovalent inactivated subunit influenza vaccine developed by Novartis Vaccines (now part of Seqirus) to address the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. The vaccine contains inactivated hemagglutinin (HA) surface antigens from the A/California/7/2009 (H1N1) strain, produced using Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cell culture technology. This cell-based manufacturing process offers a faster and more scalable alternative to traditional egg-based production methods. The vaccine is formulated with MF59, a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant that enhances the immune response by promoting the recruitment and activation of antigen-presenting cells at the injection site. This adjuvant effect allows for antigen-sparing, which was critical for maximizing vaccine supply during the pandemic. Celtura was specifically evaluated in clinical trials in Japan to assess its safety and immunogenicity in healthy adult and elderly populations.
