Overview

Celyvir is an autologous cell-based gene therapy consisting of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) infected with the oncolytic adenovirus ICOVIR5. Developed by the Hospital Infantil Universitario Niño Jesús in Madrid, it utilizes the natural tumor-homing capabilities of MSCs to deliver the oncolytic virus directly to metastatic and refractory solid tumors, effectively acting as a Trojan horse to bypass the host's immune system. Once at the tumor site, ICOVIR5 selectively replicates within and destroys cancer cells through viral lysis. This approach is primarily being evaluated in pediatric and adult patients with advanced malignancies, including neuroblastoma and various sarcomas, aiming to provide a targeted delivery system for oncolytic virotherapy.
