Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cemtirestat is a novel, bifunctional small molecule inhibitor of aldose reductase (ALR2 / AKR1B1) with potent antioxidant and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging properties. Developed by the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Comenius University in Bratislava in collaboration with Biomagi, cemtirestat is designed to target both the polyol pathway and oxidative stress, which are key drivers of chronic diabetic complications. Preclinical studies in animal models of diabetes have demonstrated its potential in alleviating symptoms of peripheral diabetic neuropathy, protecting against glycotoxicity-induced ocular damage, and ameliorating diabetic diastolic dysfunction.
