Cenegermin is a recombinant form of human nerve growth factor (NGF), produced in Escherichia coli, and used as an ophthalmic solution for the treatment of neurotrophic keratitis—a rare degenerative disease of the cornea caused by impaired corneal innervation. It is the first topical biologic approved for this indication. Cenegermin acts as an agonist at both high-affinity tropomyosin receptor kinase A (TrkA) and low-affinity p75 neurotrophin receptors, promoting corneal epithelial cell growth, survival, maintenance of limbal stem cell potential, tear production via lacrimal gland stimulation, and supporting corneal reinnervation[1][3][5][6][8]. The drug was developed by Dompé farmaceutici and is marketed under the brand name Oxervate[3][5]. It received approval in the EU in 2017 and from the US FDA in 2018[3][5].
