Cenersen sodium is an antisense oligonucleotide designed to inhibit the translation of p53 mRNA, thereby reducing the production of the p53 protein. It acts as a translation inhibitor and has antineoplastic properties. By targeting TP53 (p53), a key tumor suppressor involved in cell cycle regulation and apoptosis, cenersen sodium aims to sensitize cancer cells—particularly those with unmutated p53—to established chemotherapeutic agents. The drug has been investigated primarily for hematologic malignancies such as acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), small lymphocytic lymphoma, and transfusion-dependent anemia associated with MDS[1][5][6][9].
