Overview

CENTRAGARD is a veterinary transdermal solution developed by Boehringer Ingelheim for use in cats and kittens. It is a combination product containing two active ingredients: eprinomectin, a macrocyclic lactone of the avermectin class, and praziquantel, a pyrazinoisoquinoline derivative. Eprinomectin acts as an agonist at glutamate-gated chloride channels, which are found in nerve and muscle cells of invertebrates; this leads to an increase in chloride ion permeability, hyperpolarization, and subsequent paralysis and death of nematodes and arthropods. Praziquantel increases the permeability of the membranes of cestodes to calcium ions, causing severe spasms and paralysis of the parasite's muscles, followed by vacuolization and disintegration of the tegument. CENTRAGARD is indicated for the prevention of heartworm disease and the treatment and control of various internal parasites, including roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms.
