Cephalexin (brand name Sencephalin) is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic belonging to the beta-lactam class. It exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This action prevents the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis, leading to cell wall instability and bacterial lysis. Cephalexin is primarily active against Gram-positive cocci, including methicillin-susceptible *Staphylococcus aureus* and *Streptococcus pneumoniae*, as well as certain Gram-negative bacilli such as *Escherichia coli*, *Klebsiella pneumoniae*, and *Proteus mirabilis*. It is indicated for the treatment of various mild to moderate infections, including respiratory tract infections (such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and pneumonia), otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections. Sencephalin is a specific formulation developed by Yichang Renfu Pharmaceutical, which has undergone bioequivalence testing in healthy volunteers.
