Cephalexin and cefazolin are both first-generation cephalosporin antibiotics that work by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. They bind to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) inside bacterial cell walls, inhibiting the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis, which leads to cell lysis mediated by bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes. Both antibiotics are effective against a wide spectrum of Gram-positive bacteria, though they differ in administration routes - cephalexin is administered orally while cefazolin is given parenterally (intravenously).
