Overview

Cephalosporins + azithromycin is a combination therapy consisting of a cephalosporin antibiotic (such as cefixime or ceftriaxone) and the macrolide antibiotic azithromycin. Cephalosporins act by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. This combination is used for the treatment of various bacterial infections where broad-spectrum coverage is desired or when mixed infections are suspected. The combination may also be used in certain clinical scenarios such as sepsis or moderate COVID-19 cases; however, evidence for improved outcomes over monotherapy varies[1][2][5]. Both agents are approved antibiotics with well-established safety profiles.
