Overview

CER-209 is an oral small molecule agonist of the P2Y13 receptor, originally developed by Cerenis Therapeutics (now Abionyx Pharma). It is designed to treat metabolic and cardiovascular conditions, specifically non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and atherosclerosis. The drug's mechanism involves promoting the recognition of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) by the liver and stimulating reverse lipid transport, which facilitates the elimination of excess lipids and cholesterol via bile acid secretion. CER-209 is highly selective for the P2Y13 receptor and does not cross-react with the P2Y12 receptor. Preclinical studies demonstrated its ability to reduce atherosclerotic plaques and hepatic fat accumulation. It has completed Phase 1 clinical trials, showing a favorable safety and tolerability profile in healthy volunteers and individuals at high risk for NAFLD/NASH.
