Drug intelligence / Profile preview
CeraLyte is a proprietary rice-based oral rehydration solution (ORS) developed by Cera Products, Inc. Unlike standard glucose-based ORS formulations, CeraLyte utilizes long-chain glucose polymers derived from rice starch to facilitate the absorption of water and electrolytes via the sodium-glucose cotransport mechanism in the small intestine. This rice-based formulation provides a lower osmotic load while delivering a high density of glucose molecules upon digestion, which has been shown to reduce stool output and shorten the duration of diarrhea more effectively than traditional World Health Organization (WHO) ORS. It is primarily indicated for the management of dehydration associated with diarrhea and cholera. Additionally, CeraLyte 90 is being investigated in clinical trials for fluid resuscitation in patients with moderate to severe thermal burns to potentially reduce the requirement for intravenous fluids and mitigate complications like compartment syndrome and pulmonary edema.
