Ceramide + linoleic acid is a topical combination used primarily in moisturizers for the adjunctive treatment of various xerotic (dry) skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis, chronic eczema, pruritus hiemalis, and psoriasis. Ceramides are essential lipids that help maintain the skin barrier and retain moisture. Linoleic acid is an omega-6 fatty acid that supports epidermal barrier function and has anti-inflammatory properties. Together in topical formulations (often referred to as LA-Cer or ceramide-linoleic acid moisturizers), they work synergistically to restore the lipid balance of the stratum corneum, improve hydration, reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and accelerate recovery of skin barrier function. Clinical studies have shown that this combination enhances therapeutic outcomes when used alongside topical corticosteroids for conditions like atopic dermatitis and psoriasis by improving symptoms such as dryness, scaling, pruritus (itching), and reducing relapse rates[1][2][3]. The mechanism involves replenishing deficient ceramides in diseased skin while providing essential fatty acids necessary for normal epidermal lipid synthesis.
