Ceramide 3 is a synthetic or plant-derived lipid molecule, chemically classified as an N-acylated phytosphingosine (specifically, phytosphingosine acylated with stearic acid). It is a major component of the stratum corneum in human skin and plays a critical role in maintaining and restoring the skin’s moisture barrier. By forming lipid bilayers that trap water molecules, ceramide 3 enhances hydration, repairs micro-damages to the skin barrier, and provides protection against irritants. Its hydrophilic character allows for superior water retention compared to other ceramides. It is widely used as an active ingredient in moisturizers and topical formulations for dry or sensitive skin conditions such as eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis[1][5][7]. Mechanistically, it acts by replenishing depleted natural ceramides in the epidermis to restore barrier function rather than targeting specific protein receptors.
