CeraShield (PC-911) is an innovative, broad-spectrum nasal spray designed to provide a prophylactic barrier against a wide range of respiratory pathogens, including viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and RSV, as well as various bacteria. Developed by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, the formulation utilizes a combination of gellan gum and benzalkonium chloride to create a "molecular shield" within the nasal cavity. Upon administration, the spray forms a gel-like layer that physically traps airborne droplets and chemically inactivates pathogens by disrupting their protective membranes or envelopes. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that CeraShield can provide up to 8 hours of protection and significantly reduce viral titers in the respiratory tract. The product is intended as a non-systemic, easy-to-use intervention to reduce the transmission of respiratory infections in high-risk environments and complement existing vaccination strategies.
