Overview

CERE-140 is an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector-based gene therapy developed by Ceregene for the treatment of retinal degenerative diseases. The therapy is designed to deliver the gene for neurotrophic factor 4/5 (NT4/5), a neurotrophin licensed from Genentech that is closely related to brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). By facilitating the localized and sustained expression of NT4/5 within the retina, CERE-140 aims to provide neuroprotective support to photoreceptors and other retinal cells, potentially slowing the progression of vision loss in conditions like retinitis pigmentosa or macular degeneration. The program was in preclinical stages, focusing on optimizing delivery and biological efficacy prior to full-scale safety and toxicology studies.
