Overview

Ceridal is a medication containing cetirizine, which is a second-generation, non-sedating antihistamine. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance produced by the body during allergic reactions. Cetirizine specifically targets and inhibits the H1 receptors, preventing the effects of histamine without significantly affecting the central nervous system, making it less sedating than older antihistamines. It is primarily used for: - Relieving symptoms of allergic inflammation of the nasal airways due to allergens (allergic rhinitis) - Treating long-term hives induced by allergies (chronic urticaria) - Reducing allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the throat or nose - Treating allergy-induced asthma - Alleviating symptoms of hives and pruritus (itching) Common side effects of Ceridal may include drowsiness, headache, and dry mouth. Dosage varies depending on age, condition, and formulation. For adults, typical doses are 5 to 10 mg orally once daily for allergic rhinitis or urticaria. Pediatric dosages range from 2.5 mg to 10 mg daily depending on age. Dose adjustments are required for patients with renal impairment. It is available in tablets (10mg) and syrup/suspension (60ml). Special considerations apply to patients with kidney or liver disease, and caution is advised when driving or operating machinery due to potential slight sedation.
