Overview

Cerium oxalate is a chemical compound, specifically an inorganic cerium salt of oxalic acid. Historically, it was used as an antiemetic, particularly for vomiting during pregnancy and kinetoses, although its precise mechanism of action in this context was not fully clarified. Its antiemetic effect is believed to be local to the gastrointestinal tract, and cerium compounds generally exert biological effects by resembling calcium and inhibiting calcium-dependent physiological processes. In modern applications, cerium oxalate serves primarily as a precursor material for the synthesis of cerium dioxide (CeO2), which is utilized in various fields such as catalysis, solid oxide fuel cells, and as a sorbent material for clinical-grade 68Ge/68Ga generators. It is also investigated for its potential in large-scale energy storage applications as a pseudocapacitive electrode material due to its open pore framework structure. Furthermore, cerium oxalate plays a role in understanding mineral crystallization processes, including nonclassical crystallization pathways involving liquid droplets and amorphous particles. Fungi like *Aspergillus niger* and *Neurospora crassa* have been shown to biorecover cerium as cerium oxalate biominerals, indicating its relevance in rare earth element recycling and the biosynthesis of novel nanomaterials. It is also used in histochemical methods for visualizing phosphatase activity.
