Overview

Cernitol is a standardized pollen extract (cernitin) developed by the Swedish company Cernelle. It is composed of two distinct fractions: Cernitin T60, a water-soluble fraction, and Cernitin GBX, a fat-soluble fraction, both derived from the pollen of *Secale cereale* (rye), *Phleum pratense* (timothy), and *Zea mays* (maize). Cernitol is primarily indicated for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), chronic prostatitis (CP), and chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS). Its therapeutic effects are attributed to its anti-inflammatory properties, which include the inhibition of prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis via the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways. Additionally, it exhibits spasmolytic activity on the smooth muscles of the bladder and urethra, likely through alpha-adrenergic antagonism, and may weakly inhibit 5-alpha reductase. These actions collectively help reduce prostate volume and alleviate lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).
