Overview
Certolizumab pegol is a PEGylated, recombinant, humanized antibody Fab' fragment that specifically binds and neutralizes tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), a pro-inflammatory cytokine. Unlike other TNF inhibitors, certolizumab pegol lacks an Fc region, which reduces immune activation and may lower the risk of certain immune-related side effects. The PEGylation extends its half-life, allowing for less frequent dosing. It is primarily used to treat autoimmune diseases such as Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, plaque psoriasis, ankylosing spondylitis (including non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis), and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Certolizumab pegol was developed by UCB and is marketed under the brand name Cimzia[1][2][4][6][9].
