Cesitrex is a radionuclide brachytherapy source component intended for use with the GliaSite Radiation Therapy System (RTS), a device-based intracavitary brachytherapy platform for delivering localized radiation to the resection cavity after brain tumor surgery. As described in its FDA 510(k) submission, Cesitrex functions as the radionuclide source/applicator that is placed within the GliaSite balloon catheter to provide controlled, site-specific irradiation of residual tumor cells in the brain, improving local control while limiting dose to surrounding healthy tissue.[4] It is regulated as a radionuclide brachytherapy source rather than as a conventional pharmaceutical.
