Overview

Cesium is a naturally occurring alkali metal (atomic number 55) that exists as a soft, silvery-gold element with high reactivity and a low melting point. In medicine, non-radioactive cesium—most commonly in the form of cesium chloride—has been promoted as an alternative cancer treatment under the name "high pH therapy." Proponents claim that it increases intracellular pH in tumor cells to inhibit cell division and promote cell death; however, there is no scientific evidence supporting these claims. Radioactive isotopes of cesium (notably cesium-137 and cesium-131) are used in radiation therapy for certain cancers. Non-radioactive forms have also been suggested for depression but lack clinical support. Cesium can cause serious side effects including heart arrhythmias and hypokalemia due to its interference with potassium channels[1][2][3][4]. The FDA has not approved any non-radioactive cesium compounds for medical use due to significant safety concerns[4][7].
