Overview

Cesium chloride is an inorganic alkali metal salt that has been promoted since the 1980s as an alternative cancer treatment, often referred to as 'High pH Therapy.' The rationale behind its use is the claim that it increases the intracellular pH of tumor cells, thereby creating an alkaline environment that inhibits cancer cell division and induces apoptosis. Biologically, cesium mimics potassium ions and can disrupt potassium ion channels, leading to significant cardiotoxicity, including prolonged QT interval, ventricular tachycardia, and hypokalemia. Research also indicates it may inhibit aerobic glycolysis by decreasing the activity of enzymes such as pyruvate kinase and lactate dehydrogenase. The FDA has classified cesium chloride as a bulk drug substance posing significant safety risks and has issued warnings against its use in compounded medications or dietary supplements due to a lack of clinical evidence for efficacy and the risk of life-threatening adverse events.
